We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for universities to collaborate with RACE, the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments.

We invite academic institutions to propose innovative PhD research topics that advance fields relevant to remote maintenance of fusion energy machines.

About RACE

RACE is world-leading in the field of remote maintenance of fusion energy devices. Every year, RACE hosts PhD students based at UK universities working on topics relevant to this mission. You can find information about the challenges we are working on in our publication Robotics challenges for fusion energy.

PhDs at UKAEA

At any one time there are 100-150 students doing UKAEA-supported PhDs at around 30 different universities. Selected proposals will benefit from

  • Funding Financial support to cover research expenses, stipends, and other associated costs.
  • Industrial Supervision: Guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals and researchers in fusion robotics.
  • Resources and Information: Access to proprietary data, cutting-edge technologies, and industry-specific knowledge.
  • Collaboration Opportunities: Engagement with a network of leading experts and potential for joint publications.
