Celebrating 10 Years of Growth - Engineering the freedom to operate in challenging environments

RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments), the UKAEA’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

This is a fantastic opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate all our collaborations and what we have achieved.

Robotics and embodied AI are core to a successful, sustainable new energy economy. They give us a unique opportunity for learning from the past and to develop costs effective systems that manage the whole lifecycle, from initiation, through operation and maintenance to final decommissioning.

Key highlights among many include:

  • The upgrade of JET Remote Handling System and the removal of first sample tile
  • Research collaboration with Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI) on the world-first autonomous robot inspection at JET
  • ITER Robotics Test Facility project
  • Active Cells Facility project for the European Spallation Source (ESS)
  • UK-Japan LongOps project with Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)
  • Launch of the Robotics & AI Collaboration (RAICo) with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Sellafield Ltd and the University of Manchester.

These achievements reflect UKAEA’s goals to solve the challenges of fusion energy – to enable partners to build commercial fusion powerplants, to support the success of industry, create the places where this can happen and support the development of people in the fusion community.

If you see any opportunities to collaborate with RACE to accelerate fusion energy development, we would love to discuss how we can work together by reaching out to us at contactus@race.ukaea.uk
